A Barn Wedding in the Berkshires

One of the Berkshires' qualities that I enjoy the most is that we can't be defined by just one style of event.  Sometimes, we host grand, elaborate weddings at historic castle-like estates.  Sometimes we witness nuptials that take place overlooking a gorgeous mountain or lake vista from within a hillside garden.  Still other times we'll have couples wishing to tie the knot inside a museum, surrounded by abstract paintings or other pieces of art meant to invoke deep thought.

And sometimes, we get a call from a groom who wants to have a simple, low-key, family-centered wedding on his brand new property.  In his barn, which for the other 364 days of the year acts as a garage for his tractor, lawn mower and vintage car.

When I first met Nick and Sarah, I liked them instantly.  Both were new to the area, having just purchased a gorgeous farmhouse and barn in an idyllic setting, and both settling into their new jobs.  When I asked them what their priorities were in hosting this event, they talked about locally-sourced foods (including some veggies from Nick's gorgeous garden), great music and above all else...one that would include their closest family and friends, including quite a few children!

Their barn, though mostly used as a storage area, was definitely party-ready, as the previous owners threw many a good party and had structured the space with a fun loft area, separate room for a bar and even a make-shift catering kitchen!  I couldn't wait to transform this space into a Pinterest-worthy affair!

Fast-forward to their wedding weekend, the beginning of October.  In the Berkshires, October can either provide us with amazing Indian-summer weather or something quite the opposite.  And even after we've now survived our "non-winter," I still think they may have had the coldest, rainiest day of the season!  But even frigid temperatures and a soggy yard couldn't dampen the spirits of Nick, Sarah and those closest to them.  Possibly one of my favorite weddings yet...filled with family music, a children's choir and couple who simply adores each other...  Enjoy these images, so perfectly captured by photographer Danielle MacInnes!
